Harrogate's more exclusive areas. A feature of the course is
the meandering stream which comes into play on a number of
the holes and in particular on the 18th. The course measures
6456 yards and is a par 71 which plays well beyond this
distance if the wind gets up. Casual visitors welcome on

ticket.

Harrogate Golf Club
The oldest club in Harrogate was opened for play in 1898
and was designed by Sandy Herd who was the professional at
Huddersfied Golf Club but was born and brought up in St.
Andrews. He won the British Open in 1902 at the age of 34
and played in it for the last time at the age of 71. This
course lies on the eastern side of Harrogate on the
Knaresborough Road.

*****
Knaresborough Golf Club
Established in 1919, Knaresborough Golf Club is
situated a mile out of Knaresborough on the Boroughbridge
road. It takes approximately 15 minutes to drive there from
Harrogate. Renowned for its friendliness, the club has a
thriving social section which meets regularly in its new
clubhouse. With a par of 70, all 6410 yards promise pure
pleasure. There are plenty of places to get into trouble
along the way. Not much water on the course, but bunkers
appear to attract every wayward shot. The 11th and 15th
holes dogleg sharply to the left, with the 15th having the
added challenge of being on a steep incline down to the bend
and then rising from there to an elevated green. £25.00
per round.

Moortown Golf Club

Just one of the gems on the north side of Leeds and
easily accessible from Harrogate. The course was designed by
Dr. Alistair McKenzie in 1909 and 20 years later was chosen
as the first venue in this country to host the Ryder Cup,
won on that occasion by the British golfers. Henry Cotton
made his debut that year and the legendary Walter Hagen was
beaten 10 and 8 by George Duncan. Moortown is still a choice
by the R&A for regional qualifying rounds of the Open
Championship.

*****
Bradford Golf Club
Hawksworth

Laid out in 1899, the course runs in two loops with the
10th and 18th holes finishing outside the clubhouse. The
spacious greens, with their subtle borrows, and some tough
uncompromising par 4's make this top class course a fair
test of golf which must be treated with respect. Always in
immaculate condition, the course has been used for many
Yorkshire Championship events over the years and is the
venue for the prestigious Hawksworth Trophy, a 36 hole
scratch competition which attracts a strong field, and is
held in April.
